Opening Address:
Mr. Malcolm Johnson, Director, Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

Malcolm Johnson was elected Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey and was re-elected at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 in Guadalajara, Mexico. During his tenure ITU-T has increased its activity in relation to cybersecurity, climate change and accessibility to ICTs for persons with disabilities. Malcolm Johnson has greatly increased the involvement of developing countries in ITU’s standards activities and initiated the involvement of universities and research institutes. He introduced the free downloading of ITU-T standards and initiated a program to address the major concerns of developing countries over the lack of interoperability and

Keynote Speech 1:
"Future of ICT Convergence Technologies"
Dr. Heung Nam Kim, President, ETRI

The prolonged global economic stagnation increases the uncertainties in both market and technology, which results in a waste of the resources of R&D, manufacturing and marketing. Although the R&D share of Korea’s GDP is at a top-ranked global level, the outflows of the core value seem to be still serious because of its high dependence on the foreign technologies. Based on the ICT convergence technologies, the era of ‘Smart’ brings about the future society for mankind, which is human, healthy, and environment-friendly. Particularly, ICT is similar to “vitamin”. As an essential fusion-enabler that is applicable to all areas of industry, ICT plays a role of the sustainable growth engine and economic driving force. In this talk, 8 ICT megatrends and 10 future technologies are briefly presented. In order to predict the ICT megatrend and future technologies, we analyze and evaluate a variety of keywords and trends in both social and technical aspects, and finally select 10 future technologies for ICT convergence.

Dr. KIM, Heung-Nam is currently President of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea since 2009, and reappointed in November 2012. Before that, he has served as Vice President of ETRI R&D Planning & Strategy Division and Vice President of ETRI Embedded Software Research Division. He also has served as a Chairperson at ETRI Innovation Committee. Previously, he joined ETRI in 1983 as a Researcher at System Engineering Research Laboratory at KIST’s subsidiary. Dr. KIM has various technological and business background based upon his 20 years of large-scale national R&D project experiences: Real-time Operating System Technology, Embedded Software Industry Strategy, HomeSerV Technology,Embedded
Software Standard Platform Technology, Wireless Home Network based HD Multimedia Service Technology,and Terminal-adaptive Embedded Operating System Technology for Mobile Convergence Computing.He received a BS in Electronics Engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea and a MS Completion in Computer Science from Ball State University, USA. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University, USA.

Keynote Speech 2:
"Fostering Innovation and Moving Towards the 5G Era"
Dr. Edward G. Tiedemann Jr., Senior Vice President & Qualcomm Fellow, Qualcomm Inc.

The modern history of human progress is intertwined with the history of invention – from the steam ship to the airplane, the light bulb to the X-ray machine, the telegraph to the smartphone. Korea has long encouraged innovation in the mobile industry which has been one of the key contributors fueling the IT sector - the growth engine for the Korean economy. Indeed, Korea was the first country to adopt CDMA in 1993 and the first country to launch a LTE-Advanced smartphone in 2014.
Qualcomm’s partnerships with Korean handset manufacturers helped make CDMA commercially successful. This success enabled Korean handset manufacturers to expand their presence selling CDMA network equipment and handsets globally. Korean manufacturers’ success in the CDMA mobile telecommunication helped propel Korean companies into household global names.
This presentation will cover how Qualcomm inventions helped launch the mobile revolution and can now be found in billions of devices around the world, from smartphones and tablets, to cameras and cars, and the “Internet of Everything”. Qualcomm will highlight its vision for 5G, a unified, scalable and adaptable standard that works across various use cases and supports the connectivity needs from 2020+ at lower deployment and operating costs. 5G is about enabling new services and devices, connecting new industries and empowering new user experiences.
The presentation will also emphasize that strong patent protection globally encourages innovation. Investment in research and development by companies and individuals and the ability to patent these technologies has resulted in life-changing technologies, including the technologies that make possible the wireless communications that define our world today.
Finally, Qualcomm will discuss the role of governments in enabling innovation in the move towards 5G emphasizing the importance of sound spectrum policy including licensed, shared licensed and unlicensed spectrum. To meet the growing traffic demand, operators will need much more spectrum in the years ahead. In the past, new spectrum was made available by the traditional licensed model or unlicensed approach. However, there are cases when spectrum can’t be cleared within a reasonable timeframe, or at all locations and times. A new licensed model, called Authorized Shared Access (ASA), will allow operators to access the underutilized spectrum on a shared basis without interfering with incumbent spectrum holders.

Dr. Edward G. Tiedemann, Jr. is a Senior Vice President of Engineering and Fellow of Qualcomm Incorporated. He leads Qualcomm’s worldwide standardization activities. Dr. Tiedemann was instrumental in the design and development of the TIA/EIA/IS-95 CDMA system, also called cdmaOne™. He led Qualcomm’s and much of the industry’s efforts in the design and development of the third generation cdma2000® system. Recently he has been focusing on the evolution of mobile communications systems, the next generation of WLAN, and the convergence of WLAN and WWAN. He is particularly interested in the implications of these changes for the wireless industry. Dr. Tiedemann holds over 150 US patents and has participated in many papers, conference
lectures, and industry panels. Dr. Tiedemann holds the Ph.D. degree from MIT where he worked in the areas of queueing theory and communications networks. He holds the Master of Science degree from Purdue University where he worked on bandwidth efficient modulation. He also holds the Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech). Dr. Tiedemann is past chairman on the advisory board of the College of Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech). He has received one of the Outstanding Electrical and Computer Engineer Awards that have been given by Purdue University.

Keynote Speech 3:
"Video Communications in Future Mobile Networks"
Dr. Sun-Tae Kim, CTO, Executive Vice President of LG Uplus.

Through the LTE with the ALL-IP mobile network, we can now savor various unlimited contents that are extended from the conventional voice, message, and limited multi-media services, and we are also able to participate/share and communicate with anyone from all over the world by the social networking services. Recently, the mobile service is becoming feasible for machines with Internet of Things (IoT), not limited to humans. The core of contents is becoming "video" instead of texts or pictures. From the conventional communication scheme for reading and hearing, the service trend is heading toward "Video Communications" for participation/sharing and communication which makes people look, hear, and feel. In this talk, various network-related challenges we may face according to the service trend evolution such as increase in traffic, the number of mobile terminals, and the corresponding costs will be addressed, and the network/service strategy to resolve the issues will also be discussed.

Dr. KIM, Sun-Tae is currently CTO of LG U+ and Executive Vice President of LG U+. Before that, he served as Senior Vice President of LG U+ in 2012. Previously, he joined LG Dacom, which was formerly a corporation of LG U+, in 1983 as Assistant Manager at Management Planning in the Planning Management Division. Dr. KIM has various technological and business background based on his 30 years of work experiences in the mobile/fixed communication area in LG Group. He received a BS degree in Business and Economics from Yonsei University and a MS degree in Management Science from KAIST, Korea. He received his MS and Ph.D. in Economics from University of Washington, Seattle, WA, U.S.A.

Keynote Speech 4:
"5G Journey"
Dr. Vida Ilderem, Vice President, Intel Corporation

Mobile communication started from voice and developed to video and data services then evolved to connect to the Internet with the advent of smart phones. Proliferation of smart phones, affordable broadband internet access, and rise of the intelligent things/objects are creating a virtuous cycle requiring rapid innovation in the wireless domain. Additionally, the majority of the mobile traffic growth is dominated by video, further stressing the existing infrastructure. Users now expect high data rates, ubiquitous broadband connectivity, and low latency instant access. Hence, it is imperative that the technologies/services that we innovate and deliver are optimized for user experiences. 5G era can provide a great opportunity to address some of the unfolding requirements along with a set of metrics to closely monitor the progress. For instance, the need for new network topologies can lead to innovations in dense heterogeneous networks containing multiple radio technologies, small cells, D2D, new high frequency spectrum such as mm-wave, and so on. Given the anticipated increase in the number of connected devices including things, there will be a need for context-aware infrastructure requiring more processing at the edge of the network for data aggregation and for determining when information needs to be shared with other nodes in the network or the cloud. Therefore, 5G journey should encompass the need to co-optimize the network, device, and applications to deliver the best user experience.

Dr. Vida Ilderem is Vice President of Intel Labs and Director of Integrated Computing Research (ICR) at Intel Corporation. ICR is focused on breakthrough innovations for energy efficient connected computing with focus on new emerging platforms. Prior to joining Intel in 2009, Dr. Ilderem served as Vice President of Systems and Technology Research at Motorola’s Applied Research and Technology Center. Dr. Ilderem holds a doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. She has 27 issued patents..
